Scientist looks into coral tank with red light

ReefSeed training hub

ReefSeed  is a key innovation in global efforts to restore coral reefs, utilising much of the science and technology developed as part of the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program (RRAP).

ReefSeed is an innovative, transportable, containerised, and standalone coral aquaculture system capable of producing millions of coral larvae in remote regions for reef restoration. Following testing and training during the Great Barrier Reef coral spawning in 2024, the system was successfully established in the Maldives with our implementing partners the Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI) in early 2025.

ReefSeed during 2025 coral spawning

For this year’s spawning on the Great Barrier Reef, a new ReefSeed system is being built at AIMS’ Townsville site as part of the training of industry partners and stakeholders involved in RRAP's Pilot Deployments Program and GBRF’s Reef Seeding Initiative.

Pacific nation delegates will soon be visiting the Great Barrier Reef and AIMS’ Townsville site to see the ongoing restoration work firsthand. The plan is for innovative ReefSeed technologies to be transferred to Great Barrier Reef industry and Pacific nation partners in the future.
