The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is seeking public feedback on a proposal to revoke a small portion—approximately 45.4 hectares or 0.07%—of the Bowling Green Bay declared Fish Habitat Area (FHA–007). This revocation would enable essential maintenance and future upgrades to AIMS’ existing marine infrastructure at Cape Ferguson, which has supported scientific operations since 1976 and now requires refurbishment to remain functional for the next 50–100 years.
The proposed revocation area is located within the AIMS Scientific Zone at Chunda Bay, which is not accessible to the public. The revocation is necessary to allow AIMS to proceed with environmental approvals for infrastructure works that are currently restricted under Queensland’s Fisheries legislation.
Consultation period
Public comments are invited between Monday 23 June and Sunday 20 July 2025.
Feedback received will be incorporated into a Revocation Assessment Study, which will be submitted to the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) to inform ministerial consideration of the proposal.
