Dr Rachel Pears leads the Intervention Risk Team at AIMS, where her current research focuses on advancing intervention risk science and supporting a fuller understanding of conservation options for marine ecosystems, including coral reefs. She works collaboratively to assess risks and trade-offs across ecological and social dimensions, using science-rich, tailored approaches for novel conservation actions and emerging technologies under uncertainty.
Rachel has over 25 years’ professional experience spanning marine science, environmental management and policy, including senior roles at AIMS and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and work across reef systems around the world. Her work integrates risk assessment, diverse knowledge systems and perspectives, restoration and adaptation science, and real-world contexts, with a focus on delivering robust, transparent and fit-for-purpose frameworks and information to decision-makers.
She has led and collaborated on interdisciplinary research and applied projects across science, regulation and stakeholder contexts in Australia and internationally.
