Dr Kamran Shafi leads the Data Analytics and AI Team within the Digital Oceans Program at the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS). He is responsible for strengthening AIMS’ capabilities in artificial intelligence, machine learning and advanced analytics, and for guiding the development and deployment of data-driven solutions that address complex marine science and environmental challenges.
Drawing on more than 20 years of experience across research, academia and consulting, Kamran has led multidisciplinary analytics teams and delivered AI-enabled solutions across both private and public sectors. At AIMS, his work focuses on translating advances in data science and AI into robust and practical capabilities that support the organisation’s mission to improve ocean health, including the protection and sustainable management of the Great Barrier Reef.

Kamran supervises and mentors data scientists, AI specialists, researchers and students in applied machine learning, analytics, modelling and decision-support methods. He is experienced in mentoring PhD and MSc students and building multidisciplinary capability across scientific, technical and operational teams.
