Background
About

Andrew is a Senior Research Scientist in Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE), appointed in Aug 2026. He joined AIMS from a similar role he held for 6 years as the Strategic Lead for ORE at Cefas, the UK Government agency for marine and freshwater science evidence and advice. Andrew is a fish/fisheries behavioural ecologist, and has a 32+ years career, principally in applied science within the University sector. His role leads on the strategic development of renewable energy activities and further developing AIMS-wide initiatives into the decarbonisation agenda that contribute to the sustainability and protection of Australia’s natural resources. He has particular interest and expertise in the environmental effects and impact assessment of renewable energy developments and electricity transmission (i.e. EMFs) and more widely cumulative ecological impact assessment, ecological risk and systems approaches. Andrew chairs (has chaired) and served on many international committees and authored/co-authored numerous cross-disciplinary international journal articles, book chapters and scientific reports, many promoting critical advancements needed in evidence and data collection to address the changes to the marine and coastal environment from large scale human activity, such as ORE. He is currently the co-Chair of ICES Working Group - Offshore Windfarm Developments and Fisheries (2020 - to date) and was a lead on the development of the regional initiative, the ICES ORE Roadmap to address future integrated science and advice on offshore renewables, fisheries and ecosystem-based interactions.
