Background
About

Dr Aleksandar Zivaljevic is Manager of Data and Digital Engineering at the Australian Institute of Marine Science, where he leads the design, delivery, and operation of enterprise-scale data and digital platforms supporting marine science, long-term environmental monitoring, and operational decision-making.

With more than 25 years of experience across technology, science, and executive leadership, his work focuses on building production-grade data ecosystems that integrate real-time sensor networks, large-scale observational datasets, and satellite-derived environmental information. He specialises in modernising legacy scientific systems, establishing data governance frameworks, and deploying scalable, secure architectures that enable advanced analytics and AI in operational environments.

Dr Zivaljevic has held senior leadership roles across Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific, including with national science organisations and intergovernmental agencies. His experience spans strategy, enterprise architecture, and delivery of complex, multi-stakeholder data platforms, often in resource-constrained and geographically distributed environments.

He has advised governments and international organisations on data systems, digital transformation, and scientific information management, including work with Pacific Island nations, regional agencies, and United Nations initiatives. He is recognised as a UNESCO Ocean Expert and has contributed to global efforts in AI readiness, open data, and scientific interoperability.

Dr Zivaljevic holds a PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Auckland, along with postgraduate qualifications in business administration and management. His publications span health informatics, semantic data systems, and computational modelling.
