Welcome from the AIMS CEO, John Gunn

Welcome from the AIMS CEO, John Gunn

I am delighted to invite you all to the 2015 Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) Open Day in Townsville, on Sunday June 14, 2015.

Over the past decade and more, AIMS has been providing the high quality science needed to support decision-making by Australian businesses and communities. On June 14, AIMS would like to invite you to attend Open Day, and see our science in action, to tour the National Sea Simulator (SeaSim): the smartest ‘aquarium’ in the world and to meet our scientists.

Presently, in Townsville, AIMS researchers are conducting experiments into the effects of dredging at the SeaSim, while others are investigating how river system dynamics are affecting our oceans. Another AIMS team has recently revealed the benefits of ‘green zones' to fish stocks.

Further afield throughout Australia, AIMS continues to work with the community and businesses in areas such as improving port safety, efficiency and environmental performance, developing environmental baselines that help industry better manage environmental risks, and providing open access to the marine data and information  needed to plan for and manage coastal activities through online resources such as eAtlas and eReefs.

These and other activities all support the goals and directions set out in our new AIMS Strategic Plan 2015-2025, now available on the AIMS website.

Please read our latest edition of Waypoint to find out about just some of AIMS’ ongoing research and successes and we look forward to sharing a day of science with you on June 14.

Yours sincerely,

John Gunn
