Instrument and Field Technician

The Australian Institute of Marine Science is the leading national organisation researching tropical marine ecosystems. The Institute has world-class laboratory facilities in Townsville Queensland, Perth Western Australia and Darwin Northern Territory, two modern research vessels and extensive technical support. Facilities are being enhanced with $55M of capital funds from the Australian Government. This will include a state-of-the-art experimental ocean simulator in an extensive seawater precinct to support innovative research into coral spawning, water quality and climate change.

An exceptional opportunity exists for an Instrument and Field Technician to join our Great Barrier Reef Ocean Observing System (GBROOS) team and take an active role in the design and development of real-time sensor network equipment used to measure water and environmental patterns within our reef systems and open oceans around Australia.

The successful candidate will be responsible for assembly, calibration and maintenance work for the remote instrumentation and will frequently participate on field trips to deploy and retrieve components of the sensor network.

Qualifications in electronics or instrumentation are essential and field work experience and diving and boating qualifications will considered highly advantageous.

This position will be based at our Cape Ferguson Research Facility in Townsville, Queensland and is available for a fixed term to 30 June 2013. Attractive working conditions apply including a commencing salary of $54,247 - $68,008 plus superannuation, generous leave, commuter car transportation to site and many other benefits.  This opportunity will initially be offered for a fixed term period of three years.
