About this exciting Opportunity

An exciting permanent opportunity has arisen to join a long-term growth area for AIMS within our Coral Reef Adaptation team, who are focused on understanding natural rates of acclimatisation and adaptation and potential enhancements for restoration. As a Senior/Principal Research Scientist, you will build a research program in the field of population genetics and genomics and lead strategic research to understand genetic structure of reef building corals, predict and measure corals adaptability to environmental changes and develop genetic principles for managing breeding of corals for restoration and adaptation. Your expertise in the analysis and interpretation of population genomic data will enable AIMS to deliver existing and grow new opportunities in collaboration with a range of partners and stakeholders.

You will use your experience to supervise technical staff, research students and post-doctoral fellows, as well as engage closely with stakeholders and partners of AIMS and to identify opportunities for collaborative research within AIMS and among research partners and industry.

About you

Drawing on your PhD and significant postdoctoral research experience working on the population and adaptation genetics and genomics of corals or other species, you will lead and implement a research program to make high impact contributions to research in the area of reef recovery, restoration and adaptation. Your reputation for academic achievements will be at an international level, and evidenced by an excellent publication, communication and funding track record.


You will be an effective and approachable leader, experienced in developing skills and knowledge of others and fostering an atmosphere of positivity and creativity. You are familiar working with diverse groups (including industry, academia and government partners/stakeholders) and will have proven influencing, stakeholder engagement and communication skills. You have a desire and drive to facilitate people and projects beyond your immediate group.


Using your SCUBA diving qualifications you will have the capacity to participate in fieldwork activities at remote, off-shore locations, for extended periods of time as required.
