The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is Australia’s tropical marine research agency.

Our research into some of Australia’s iconic marine ecosystems guides their management and that of similar systems around the world. We do marine science that has practical benefit to the real world, providing high quality, large-scale and long-term research that is used by governments, industry and the wider community to make informed decisions about the Great Barrier Reef, North-West Shelf and Arafura and Timor Seas.

About this Opportunity

AIMS’ Government Relations team provides high-level executive support and services to facilitate and manage successful and effective participation and representation of the AIMS Leadership Team (ALT) in engagement with the Australian Government in Canberra. The Government Relations team assists AIMS to maintain effective relationships and to build AIMS’ profile in Canberra. The team act as AIMS’ representative in high-level Governmental meetings with senior Department executives, at interdepartmental policy/program meetings, and with advisors in Minister’s office/s, and inform and advise AIMS Leadership team with updates and reports on Government Relations matters.

In the role of Government Relations Assistant Manager, you will support the Government Relations Manager as AIMS’ representatives in Canberra through the management and development of effective relationships with the Australian Government. You will manage government/department information requests, provide intelligence reports and updates for AIMS Leadership team, promote AIMS’ engagement projects through planning and delivery of events, and will undertake governmental processing for AIMS corporate reporting.

You will support AIMS’ participation in senate estimates, Parliamentary inquiries, and policy/program reviews, and will also assist in the preparation of briefs, correspondence and advice for various Ministers, Advisors, and government departments and agencies. This will also include assisting in the preparation of documentation to support AIMS participation in senior forums.

You will also help to build and manage AIMS’ profile in Canberra through the promotion of AIMS’ capabilities and projects, and identification of engagement opportunities for AIMS’ CEO/ALT with various government departments/agencies and in cross-governmental activities through targeted sourcing, reviews, analysis, reporting and advice.

About You

Underpinning your suitability for this position will be your tertiary qualification/s in a relevant area, coupled with your experience in managing multiple stakeholders and understanding of stakeholder engagement, government liaison and policy, and responsibilities of APS organisations. You will also be able to demonstrate your:

  • Proficiency and experience in sourcing, reviewing and analysis of information to develop targeted briefs, reports and advice for AIMS’ Leadership Team and government Ministers, departments and agencies;
  • Proven ability to work independently with a high level of problem solving and time management skills to ensure deliverables are provided to clients and stakeholders within tight timeframes;
  • Professional attributes of adaptability and flexibility, with the ability to foster innovation and collaborative relationships; and
  • Ability to deliver presentations and influence high-level decision makers through exceptional communication skills and organisational management capabilities.

Non-Australian Citizens must hold an appropriate Visa with working entitlements that allows paid employment with AIMS for the term of the appointment, depending on the relevant Department of Home Affairs current policies.
