The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is Australia’s tropical marine research agency.

Our research into some of Australia’s iconic marine ecosystems guides their management and that of similar systems around the world. We do marine science that has practical benefit to the real world, providing high quality, large-scale and long-term research that is used by governments, industry and the wider community to make informed decisions about the Great Barrier Reef, North-West Shelf and Arafura and Timor Seas.

AIMS researchers at our locations in Townsville, Darwin and Perth have access to the best tools and equipment like the National Sea Simulator, cutting edge laboratories and our fleet of research vessels.

About this Opportunity

In the position of Data Systems Engineer, you will work within a small established agile software development team to contribute to the implementation and improvement of AIMS critical research data processing, visualisation, and discovery systems. You will utilise programming languages including Java and Python to implement software solutions deployed on Amazon Cloud and/or on-premise infrastructure, and will contribute to the improvement of operational systems through the resolution of technical issues. The successful candidate will be rewarded with:

  • AOF Level 4 Salary ($85,970 - $97,833 per annum)
  • 15.4% superannuation
  • Generous leave provisions
  • Full Time Temporary position available via our labour hire arrangement to commence ASAP up to 30 June 2022
  • Located in Townsville, Queensland

About You

Underpinning your suitability for this position will be your Tertiary qualification/s in Information Technology, Systems Engineering or similar, or equivalent experience, alongside your well-developed programming skills in Java, or Python, or web technologies. You will also be able to demonstrate your:

  • Strong software engineering skills with experience in software/systems development in web-based systems and/or data processing;
  • Highly developed technical problem-solving skills and ability to investigate, diagnose, test and resolve issues within a diverse range of complex data systems; and
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to provide high-level professional services within a science research environment.

Non-Australian Citizens must hold an appropriate Visa with working entitlements that allows paid employment with AIMS and associated labour hire agency for the term of the appointment, depending on the relevant Department of Home Affairs current policies.
