About this Opportunity
AIMS’ Experimental Scientist (Oceanography) performs essential activities that enable our Sustainable Coastal Ecosystems and Industries in Tropical Australian program to deliver science relating to the critical issue of cumulative stressors in a broad range of tropical marine habitats arising from coastal and catchment development, in the context of shelf-scale ecosystem drivers.
In this exciting role, you will work within a small team to provide technical leadership for the delivery of water quality monitoring and biogeochemistry research in the coastal ocean. You will apply your high degree of problem-solving skills, initiative, reliability, and attention to detail to coordinate laboratory analyses for monitoring programs, as well as designing and conducting field experiments in the coastal ocean. The current research foci for the team are productivity, nutrient cycling, and land‐sea linkages. The research is essential to elucidate the drivers of coastal water quality and identify links with land‐based activities to better inform monitoring and management decisions. Additionally, you will take on a central role in the Reef 2050 Marine Monitoring Program (MMP) ‐ Inshore Water Quality as well as leadership responsibilities for water quality monitoring at the Yongala National Reference Station through IMOS.

You will have achieved your postgraduate degree (MSc or PhD) in environmental science, chemistry, biology, oceanography or a related field, and will be able to reflect on your knowledge and experience conducting boat-based field research, including familiarity with instrumentation such as CTDs and data-logging sensors to demonstrate your:
- Ability to use problem-solving skills to design and conduct experiments on biogeochemistry topics such as productivity or nutrient cycling, which may include learning new sampling techniques or adapting analytical methods;
- Significant expertise in marine or estuarine water quality including knowledge of the collection, storage, and analytical techniques of samples such as: dissolved and particulate nutrients, organic carbon, chlorophyll a, total suspended solids, CDOM, and salinity; and
- Ability to operate and maintain a range of instruments specific to an analytical laboratory such as spectrophotometers, fluorometers, and salinometers.
