Coastal processes group

These teams do research on tropical marine coastal processes to provide the knowledge for proactive, sustainable use of these valuable resources. The teams studies the impact of natural processes as well as human-induced activity, to differentiate cause and effect.

One team focuses specifically on the water quality of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. The joint Commonwealth / Queensland Government Reef Water Quality Protection Plan proposes new actions to achieve a sustainable future for the Great Barrier Reef and industries in the coastal zone – from catchments (watersheds) to the continental shelf. AIMS will carry out research to quantify the effectiveness of these actions from an ecosystem processes approach, and provide feedback to refine those actions and establish new policies to facilitate economic development.

Another research team focuses specifically on the coastal zone of the Northern Territory, arguably the least developed in Australia due to a sparse population.

The Northern Territory economic development strategy strives for economic sovereignty through use of natural resources and infrastructure. The imminent Plan of Management for Darwin Harbour Region will provide a focus for the AIMS Northern Australia Team, who will generate knowledge for sustainable development through understanding ecosystem processes and gauging the predictive impact of human activity.

Theses teams provide scientific data to resource managers planning the sustainable use of freshwater from Northern Territory rivers and estuaries.

The Analytical Technology Team provides specialist analytical chemistry expertise, helping with experimental design, field studies, laboratory-based analysis and data interpretation.
