Reef monitoring

Reef issues

This section contains a collection of material about Crown-of-thorns starfish (COTS), coral bleaching, coral disease, and any other issues based discussions.

Crown-of-thorns Starfish

The reef monitoring project studies crown-of-thorns distribution and densities on approximately 100 reefs annually. Results are reported in the survey updates following each trip and in the annual status report.

The most recent summary on patterns of Crown- of- thorns occurrence and a list of reefs with high densities of starfish.
COTS status

The animation summaries the pattern of COTS on the GBR from 1985 - 2001

This article has a summary of the relationship between COTS and their prey (coral) based on data collected by the reef monitoring project.
Predator/prey interaction

Part of AIMS online reference collection this article answers many common questions about COTS by Dr. Peter Moran.

Coral Bleaching

The reef monitoring project records bleaching information in broadscale surveys, scuba search and from video transects.

Incidence of coral disease

Incidence of coral disease are recorded in SCUBA search surveys by the reef monitoring team.
