International year of the ocean

One earth, one ocean, one life

In recognition of the importance of the oceans and the marine environment,
the United Nations has declared 1998 to be the International Year of the
Ocean.

The overall objective is to focus the attention of governments and the public on the need for sustainable development of this finite resource. With pollution, population growth, excessive fishing, coastal zone degradation and climate variability placing increasing pressure on our oceans, now is the time for action to ensure the continued viability of our valuable marine heritage.

Marine Careers:

Marine science and management are exciting and diverse fields of endeavour. They are important to Australia, an island continent with an enormous and unique coastline which includes 50000 kilometres of rocky shores, vast beaches, mangrove forests, tropical islands and coral reefs.

Australians have a special affinity with the sea, which is not surprising given that more than 80% of our population live close to the coast. In addition, our new off-shore Exclusive Economic Zone of 12 million square kilometres is nearly double our total land area, and marine based industries contribute in excess of $30 billion annually to our economy!

The sites listed below will help you learn more about the marine environment. While some sites provide details about the physical and biological resources of our oceans, others discuss government policy, marine research and resource management. Some sites also offer information on how you can help in the fight to conserve our valuable marine heritage.
