Black Marlin

Peter Speare, Australian Institute of Marine Science

BLACK MARLIN

Scientific Name : Makaira indica (Cuvier, 1832)

Diagnostics

Distinguished from other marlin by the body depth being greater than the height of the front lobe of the first dorsal fin, and the second dorsal fin beginning slightly forward of the second anal fin. Adults are most easily identified, as the nape is well-elevated and the pectoral fins are rigid and cannot be pressed back against the sides of the body. There are usually no blotches or dark stripes along the body after death.
