Myrmidon Reef

Myrmidon Reef lies about 130km off-shore from Townsville at the edge of the continental shelf. It is the most exposed of the reefs in the Townsville transect, and is surrounded by deep water.

There have been no recorded reports of crown-of-thorns starfish on the reef, however shallow-water corals were affected by the 2002 bleaching event. The sites are characterised by good coral cover, and are located in 2 relatively exposed areas.

Myrmidon I faces east on the reef front and consists of 3 separate lines at various depths down the slope (3m, 6m and 15m).

Myrmidon II faces north-east and strong currents are typically experienced in this area as water wraps around the reef corner. Myrmidon II also consists of 3 separate lines a different depths (3m, 6m and 18m).
