There
are 30 permanent sites established on 6 reefs in 2 separate regions
of the Great Barrier Reef.
Northern
Great Barrier Reef region
The first region lies
near Cooktown (latitude
14.5ºS) on 2 reefs with a total of 13 sites. Lizard
Island (L) lies 30km offshore and is a mid-shelf continental
island. 5
sites are
located on the island’s fringing reef at depths between
2m and 13m. Yonge Reef, (Y)
an outer “ribbon” reef
about 50km offshore, has 8 sites at depths ranging from 2m
to 38m.
Central
Great Barrier Reef region
The second region lies about 500km south of this in the central
GBR near Townsville (latitude 19ºS). It consists of
4 reefs with a total of 17 sites. Pandora (P)
is the closest
and
lies about
18km offshore.
John Brewer (JB) and Rib
(R) are mid-shelf reefs 70km offshore and Myrmidon
(M) is at
the edge of the GBR about 130km offshore. In addition to
these sites,
2 more
were established
at Nelly Bay, Magnetic Island (N)
in December 2001 to document
bleaching (10km offshore).
