Northern Great Barrier Reef region

The first region lies near Cooktown (latitude 14.5ºS) on 2 reefs with a total of 13 sites. Lizard Island (L) lies 30km offshore and is a mid-shelf continental island. 5 sites are located on the island’s fringing reef at depths between 2m and 13m. Yonge Reef, (Y) an outer “ribbon” reef about 50km offshore, has 8 sites at depths ranging from 2m to 38m.

Central Great Barrier Reef region

The second region lies about 500km south of this in the central GBR near Townsville (latitude 19ºS). It consists of 4 reefs with a total of 17 sites. Pandora (P) is the closest and lies about 18km offshore. John Brewer (JB) and Rib (R) are mid-shelf reefs 70km offshore and Myrmidon (M) is at the edge of the GBR about 130km offshore. In addition to these sites, 2 more were established at Nelly Bay, Magnetic Island (N) in December 2001 to document bleaching (10km offshore).
