Background
Information
As part of
AIMS Research
Plan 2003-06, the Coastal
Processes Group has formed a team of scientists with research
interests focused on northern Australia.
The Sustainable Coastal
Development of Northern Australia (SCDNA) team is led by Dr. Eric
Wolanski.
An intended research
outcome of SCDNA is:
"improved coastal
planning and reduced business risk through better description and
understanding of processes in Darwin Harbour for environmentally
compatible development"
To achieve this outcome, one of the team’s
research goals (Goal 1.1) is to determine the status and trends in
Darwin Harbour water quality via a monitoring program. This goal
aligns with research needs identified by the Department of
Infrastructure, Planning and Environment (DIPE) of the Northern
Territory Government.
The
Darwin Harbour Regional Plan of Management (2003) has the
following vision for the Darwin Harbour region:
|
|
"A
biologically rich and diverse marine and terrestrial
environment for our use and enjoyment today, and for our
children tomorrow…"
One of the goals
of the plan of management is to maintain a healthy
environment, and to maintain and improve water quality and
ecological health of the marine, freshwater and terrestrial
environments in the region. Outcome 1.2. of the plan is the
protection and enhancement of freshwater, estuarine and marine
water quality.
