Aquaculture research at AIMS

Cultured marine species

Many of the living marine resources of the oceans can be successfully farmed. As with land-based agriculture, this has many advantages:

  • production can target selected individual species which can be mass produced
  • species which are rare in the wild can be farmed
  • pressure on wild stocks which are becoming overexploited is reduced
  • the potential wild harvest can be exceeded

Aquaculture products can be for:

  • human food
  • animal food
  • manufactured products
  • jewellery
  • pharmaceuticals

AIMS scientists discover, develop and deliver solutions in existing and emerging aquaculture ventures.
