Coral sea region billfish atlas

Data Sources and Acknowledments

The bathymetric chart is modified from the CCOP/SOPAC chart "Bathymetry of the Southwest Pacific", prepared by L.W. Koenke, C. Jouannic and P. Woodward. Geological definitions are from "Glossary of Geology" (3rd edition) edited by R.L. Bates and J.A. lackson, published by the American Geological institute, Washington, D.C. (1 987). The wind roses are from "Seas around Australia. Oceanographic and Meteorological data", Nederlands Meteorologisch lnstitut Publ. 124 (1949).

The description of the winds and information on surface currents are from Pacific Islands Pilot Volume 1 (10th edn, 1984) and Volume 11 (10th edn, 1988). Information on subsurface currents is based on an unpublished circulation model of Rowan Hughes (James Cook University, Townsville).

The seasonal catch summary figures are based on data in the South Pacific Commission's Skipjack Program Technical Report No. 3 (1981).

All other catch data figured are based on ].K. Howard and S. Ueyanagi's "Distribution and relative abundance of billfishes (Istiophoridae) of the Pacific Ocean" (Studies in Tropical Oceanography 2, 1965).

Information on black marlin movements comes from the Australian Gamefish Tagging Program run by the Fisheries Research Institute of New South Wales.

This project would not have been possible without the encouragement and assistance of the Fisheries Departments of the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu Governments and the Tuna and Billfish Assessment Program of the South Pacific Commission.

The New Britain, Lae and Moresby Gamefishing Clubs kindly gave us copies of their catch records. Many local fishermen helped with information and general assistance.

In particular, we would like to thank Doug Brooke, Daryl Goile, Peter Gwalter, John Hoggard and Mervyn Penny.

Most of the remaining information came from a wide range of scientific papers.

References to many of these papers can be found in "Australian Fisheries Resources" (Bureau of Resource Sciences, Canberra, 1993) and Volumes 1 and 2 of "Planning the Future of Billfishes: Research and Management in the 90s and Beyond" (R.H. Stroud ed., published by the National Coalition for Marine Conservation, Inc., Savannah Georgia, 1989 & 1990).
