Coral sea region billfish atlas

Seasonal Catch-Rates

STRIPED MARLIN

Catch-rates of striped marlin in the region are very low in January and negligible from February through August. Catch rates increase markedly in the southeast corner in September and reach a peak around Vanuatu and the southern Coral Sea in October - November. These are pre-spawning / spawning aggregations equivalent to those of black marlin in the northwest Coral Sea at the same time of year. In December - January, perhaps earlier around Vanuatu than further west, these aggregations disperse and the fish move southward.
