Marlin Characteristics

  Black Marlin Blue Marlin Striped Marlin
First dorsal fin Low and rounded, less than 1/2 body depth Medium height, equal to 1/2 - 3/4 body depth Pointed, greater than or equal to body depth
Second dorsal fin Begins in front of second anal fin Begins slightly behind second anal fin Begins slightly behind second anal fin
Pectoral fin Rigid in adults, more flexible in juveniles but will not lay against body Folds flat against body Folds flat against body
Pelvic fin Short; little change in length with fish size Moderately long Moderately long
Vertical bars Occasionally present, may not be obvious after death Normally present, may not be obvious after death Normally present, remain after death
