Key to Common Billfishes

Marlin characteristics

1. Caudal keels paired go to 2
  Caudal keels single Broadbill
2. Pelvic fins less than 1/2 distance between their origin and vent go to 3
  Pelvic fins greater than 1/2 distance between their origin and vent Sailfish
3. Pectoral fins fold against body go to 4
  Pectoral fins fixed or difficult to lay against body Black marlin
4. First dorsal fin around 1/2 - 3/4 body depth, lower jaw heavy and curved Blue marlin
  First dorsal fin approximately equal to body depth, lower jaw slender and straight Striped marlin
