WEATHER STATIONS AND OCEANOGRAPHIC BUOYS

The Australian Institute of Marine Science operates and maintains a series of remote data stations situated on the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland and Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia.

Remote sender units

 

Agincourt Reef AWS

AIMS Automatic Weather Station (AWS) on
Agincourt reef approximately 50km NE of the
Daintree River, Far North Queensland.

Agincourt Reef is part of the Ribbon reefs of
the outer Great Barrier Reef system.

Great Barrier Reef.

Davies Reef (II) AWS

AIMS Automatic Weather Station (AWS) at
Davies Reef approximately 100km NE of the
City of Townsville, North Queensland.

Davies Reef is a mid-shelf reef of the
Great Barrier Reef.

Halftide Rocks AWS

AIMS Automatic Weather Station (AWS) on
Halftide Rocks, approximately 20km E of
Yeppoon near Great Keppel Island,
Central Queensland.

Hardy Reef AWS

AIMS Automatic Weather Station (AWS) at
Hardy Reef approximately 75km NE of Shute
Harbour - Whitsundays, North Queensland.

This weather station is sited on the FantaSea
pontoon at Hardy Reef.

Hardy Reef is a mid-shelf reef of the
Great Barrier Reef.

Myrmidon Reef AWS

AIMS Automatic Weather Station (AWS) at
Myrmidon Reef approximately 120km NNE of the City of Townsville, North Queensland.

Myrmidon Reef is an outer-shelf reef of the
Great Barrier Reef.

Ningaloo AWS

AIMS Automatic Weather Station (AWS) at
Ningaloo Reef, Milyering (Western Australia)

Ningaloo Reef is the largest fringing reef in the
world. Located in Western Australia.

Oceanographic Buoy AWS

The buoy was retrieved on February 23, 2001, and returned to the Institute's Cape Ferguson workshop for maintenance. This work will involve an upgrade of various mechanical and electronic components.

Orpheus Island approximately 75km NNE of
the City of Townsville, North Queensland.

Orpheus Island is a near shore island of the
Great Barrier Reef.
