Remote data stations
WEATHER
STATIONS AND
OCEANOGRAPHIC BUOYS
The Australian Institute of Marine Science operates and
maintains a series of remote data stations situated on the Great Barrier
Reef in Queensland and Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia.

Glossary of terms
used in the
stations data pages
| Term |
Meaning |
Locn |
Location - This is measurement of latitude (degrees and minutes
north or south from the equator) and longitude (degrees and
minutes east or west from the zero degree meridian that crosses
through Greenwich, England).
|
| dir |
Direction - In meteorological
terms this is the direction that what is being measured is coming
from. In oceanographic terms this is the direction that what is
being measured is heading towards.
|
| knots |
Knots is a measure of wind speed
nominally read at a height of 10 meters above the base of the
station or above sea level. 1 knot = 1.152 miles per hour (mph) or
1.85 kilometers per hour (km/h).
|
| hPa |
Hectopascals is a measure of
atmospheric pressure equivalent to millibars.
|
| degC |
Degrees Celsius - a measure of
temperature. (Named after the Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius
(1701-1744)). Based on 100 units between the boiling point and
freezing point of water at sea level. 0ºC = 32ºF.
|
| W1Temp |
A surface measurement of water
temperature. Nominally measured at a 1 meter depth. The W1Temp
readings on AIMS weather stations are measured at various depths
to 1 meter depending on research requirements.
|
| W2Temp |
A sub-surface measurement of water
temperature. Nominally measured at a 10 meter depth. The W2Temp
readings on AIMS weather stations are measured at various depths
depending on research requirements.
|
| PAR |
Photosynthetically Active
Radiation - spectrally related measurement of sunlight expressed
in micro-Einsteins per square centimeter per second (µE/cm2/s).
|
All readings on AIMS
weather stations are 30 minute averages.
