Remote data stations
WEATHER STATIONS AND OCEANOGRAPHIC BUOYS

The Australian Institute of Marine Science operates and maintains a series of remote data stations situated on the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland and Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia.

Oceanographic Buoy - Lat 15°56S / Long 145°45E

The Institutes Oceanographic Buoy provides near real time Oceanographic data to the Institute, using HF radio telemetry. A commercially available electro-magnetic current meter is suspended below the moored buoy. Data from the current meter is captured by a controller unit in the buoy, and stored for later retrieval by a HF radio telemetry system. The hull and most of the electronic components of the buoy were designed and manufactured by the Institute’s Engineering Workshops. The buoy has been operational since September 27, 2000.

Quicksilver Cruises

AIMS gratefully acknowledges the assistance of Quicksilver Cruises in supporting the operation of the oceanographic buoy.

The buoy was retrieved on February 23, 2001, and returned to the Institute's Cape Ferguson workshop for maintenance. This work will involve an upgrade of various mechanical and electronic components.
