Bi-annual
Australian Organic Geochemistry Conference
12 - 14 July 2000.

The Australian Organic Geochemistry Conference will be held
in Townsville. All contributions in the general field of
Organic, Isotope and Environmental Geochemistry will be
considered. Pre and post conference field trips will be
organised to visit nearby fossil beds of ancient reefs and to
the spectacular Great Barrier Reef. This is the origin of this
years conference title and does not limit the content of
the papers to be presented.
Attached are the registration forms, etc. All those
interested in attendance or in presenting a paper, please let
us know ASAP. We are searching for all aspects related to OGC.
So far we have abstracts on gas, coal & petroleum
geochemistry, sources and fluxes of marine organics, molecular
and isotopic markers of many sorts including humics, fulvics
& lipids, and more...
Two Australian teams have made big splashes in Science and
Nature last year. I have engaged both to present their ground
breaking work in two keynote lectures:
Jochen Brocks et al (ANU/AGSO)
not only showed that the whole Hamersley Iron deposit was set
down by Archea but they used the molecular marker approach to
push the origin of life on Earth back another billion years.
Jeri Dickens et al (JCU)
have put together the story which shows the massive carbon
input during the latest Paleocene thermal maximum was gas
hydrates liberated from continental margin sediments. His
"Blast from the Past" makes a convincing argument
for including these in the Global Carbon Cycle.
Geotech P/L from Perth offers a prize for the best student
presentation, oral or poster.
