Map of the Townsville environs
The 'Environs' pages describes, or links to, the many
fascinating things to see and do in our part of the world. The Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is
the dominant attraction in the region and extends approximately 600 Km south and 1000 Km
north of us. The GBR is the largest coral reef structure in the world and is the focus of
much of our research.
The Townsville region of North Queensland contains many
marine and terrestrial national parks. The Australian Institute of Marine Science is
actually located within the Bowling Green Bay National Park.
The Institute is 50 Km by road east of Townsville, the
administrative centre of North Queensland.
AIMS
is located here
With a district population
of more than 150,000 Townsville is the largest city in tropical
Australia and a major import / export center for northern Australia.
