Environs around AIMS and the Townsville district of North Queensland
Bowling Green Bay National Park

(Map reference 10) - Distance from Townsville: 30Km.

One of tropical Australia's largest and most diverse coastal wetlands are located here in the Bowling Green Bay National Park, 30 Km east of Townsville on the Bruce Highway.

The National Park extends from the Burdekin delta, westwards to Cleveland Bay and south from Cape Cleveland to the Mount Elliot massif.

The wetland complex is mostly coastal plains with tidal mudflats, mangroves and salt marshes. There is also an abundance of birdlife, including migratory birds.

 

The lowlands of the national park are listed under the Ramsar Convention as a wetland of international importance.

  • Sea Turtles.
There are 244 species of birds that visit the wetlands, including Little Tern, Waterfowl, Brolgas, Magpie Geese and Sanderlings. Approximately half of the species that visit, breed here.

  • Mangroves

 

The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Significance was signed by 18 nations in 1971, with the purpose of reducing global loss of wetlands and the conservation of, and sustainable management of, the remaining wetlands.
