AIMS HOSTED A COMMUNITY GROUP WETLANDS WORKSHOP

AIMS hosted members of a regional community group in a workshop aimed at jointly developing an application to the Natural Heritage Trust for investment in identifying, cataloguing and restoring critical wetlands.

Wetlands The Townsville ZAC (Zonal Advisory Committee to the Queensland Fisheries Management Authority) hopes to use the fishing community and landholders in a bid to survey critical barramundi nurseries in the world-recognised Bowling Green Bay wetlands and the Townsville Town Common.
Coastal wetlands support a wide variety of fish, plants and birds.

Mangrove forests Some of the wetlands are listed under the international Ramsar convention.

The involvement of graziers and cane farmers will help restore access and water quality in the wetlands, which are threatened by alienation and invasive weeds and pasture grasses.
Mangrove forests play an important role for the survival of many
     species of fish.

Barramundi jumping The region may be the most important barramundi nursery on the entire east coast"
