Capability Statement

Only at AIMS will you find:

  • A limited-access site of 207 hectares in tropical Australia (in a scientific research zone), surrounded by national and marine park, with a high level of natural biosecurity.
  • State-of-the-art seawater aquaria and controlled environment rooms.
  • Integrated high-tech research facility for identification of marine molecules.
  • Advanced biosecure laboratories with a PC2 facility, located on the coast near the Great Barrier Reef, enabling a fast transition from the sea to the lab.
  • A bioresources library with one of the largest collections of marine extracts in the world, gathered from more than 20,000 organisms from around Australia.
  • Accredited biodiscovery capability compliant with all legislation and policy.
  • A coordinated network of weather stations providing real-time data about the Great Barrier Reef.
  • Climate change research capability including coral core based climate hindcasting.
  • Long-term monitoring of the main drivers and indicators of coral reef health.
  • Access to high-quality coastal water with pumping capacity of more than 700,000 litres a day, with major storage and treatment capability.
  • Aquaculture facilities where marine species can be reared from egg to adult, under optimal conditions.
  • Purpose built research vessels that provide access to tropical coastal and continental shelf waters.
  • Arafura Timor Research Facility (ATRF) - the only specialised marine research laboratory in Darwin.
