Capability Statement
World-class science through
collaboration

While
core research is conducted throughout Australias
ocean territory, with particular emphasis on the northern
waters between the Great Barrier Reef and Ningaloo,
AIMS expertise is enlisted throughout the world. To
build capacity, AIMS maintains effective collaborative
networks and partners with other research providers,
managers and industry. AIMS works with more than 90 organisations
across all Australian states and territories, and in 20
countries around the globe. These partnerships have
advanced marine science and produced knowledge-based
solutions for marine managers and industries such as oil
and gas, fisheries, tourism, aquaculture and
environmental biotechnology.

A joint venture with James Cook
University, "AIMS@JCU", has formalised a long standing
relationship between the institutions and confirmed Townsville's
status as a world-class centre for research and teaching in
tropical marine science.
Another joint venture with the
Australian National University has established the Arafura Timor
Research Facility (ATRF). The partners and Charles Darwin
University have increased the marine research capability of
northern Australia, helping to bridge the gap between the social
and biological sciences.
The Institute also engages in
major collaborations such as the new Marine and Tropical Sciences
Research Facility and the Western Australian Marine Science
Institution. These multi-agency programs combine the research
strengths of universities, research organisations and industry
partners.
AIMS maintains a leading role in
many international coral reef research initiatives, including
CReefs, a field program within the global Census of Marine Life
(CoML), and the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network. Through
partnerships with international marine science organisations such
as the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA),
AIMS is improving its ability to address issues of national and
international importance.
Research fleet provides
unparalleled marine access
The AIMS fleet has two specialised
research vessels, the RV Solander and RV Cape
Ferguson, and several smaller boats. These provide
Australias primary access to all our tropical marine
environments, from coastal estuaries to the deep waters of the
continental shelf. The larger vessels feature wet and dry
laboratories and can deploy oceanographic equipment.
