Senior Technical Officer

The Australian Institute of Marine Science is the leading national organisation researching tropical marine ecosystems. The Institute has world-class laboratory facilities in Townsville Queensland, Perth Western Australia and Darwin Northern Territory, two modern research vessels and extensive technical support.

AIMS is internationally renowned for its capabilities in marine biodiversity, water quality, marine microbiology and climate change. Significant federal government funding is being invested into the AIMS Tropical Marine Research Facilities Project of which a key outcome is the commissioning of the Australian Tropical Oceans Simulator (ATOS).

Design and construction of this state-of-the-art experimental aquarium facility is currently underway at the AIMS Cape Ferguson Research Facility in Townsville, Queensland. This new facility will support innovative research into coral reef ecology, coral spawning, water quality and climate change. A prototype facility is nearing completion and an opportunity for a Senior Technical Officer has been created to steer this project into the future.

The Senior Technical Officer will coordinate the daily operations of the ATOS facility ensuring reliability and continuous functioning of the life support systems for optimal animal husbandry. This role will also take an active lead in the design, installation and operation of the tanks and equipment as well as supervising the Technical Officer position.

The successful candidate will have full responsibility for the effective utilisation of the facility equipment and will assist scientific staff in experimental design through appropriate systems configuration, operation, monitoring and preliminary analysis of data.

Tertiary qualifications in a relevant scientific field as well as detailed knowledge of operating recirculating seawater reticulation systems and live feed production are essential.

Attractive working conditions apply including a remuneration package of $71,258 - $81,091 plus up to 15.4% superannuation, learning and development opportunities, generous leave entitlements, 9 day fortnight, commuter car transportation to site and many other benefits.  This opportunity will initially be offered for a fixed term period of three years.
