Position No 475

Research Aquarist

The Australian Institute of Marine Science is the leading national organisation researching tropical marine ecosystems. The Institute has world-class laboratory facilities in Townsville Queensland, Perth Western Australia and Darwin Northern Territory, two modern research vessels and extensive technical support.

AIMS is internationally renowned for its capabilities in marine biodiversity, water quality, marine microbiology and climate change. Significant federal government funding is being invested into the AIMS Tropical Marine Research Facilities Project of which a key outcome is the commissioning of the Australian Tropical Oceans Simulator (ATOS).

Design and construction of this state-of-the-art experimental aquarium facility is currently underway at the AIMS Cape Ferguson Research Facility in Townsville, Queensland. This new facility will support innovative research into coral reef ecology, coral spawning, water quality and climate change. A prototype facility is nearing completion and an opportunity for a Research Aquarist has been created to steer this project into the future.

The Aquarist will lead and develop the systems for the holding, propagation, and breeding of organisms for use in research programs undertaken within the ATOS facility with an initial and primary focus on corals. This role will work closely with our research scientists and external collaborators to develop specific research programs with the aquarium capabilities. A primary focus will be a captive breeding program for corals.

Tertiary qualifications in a related field and extensive aquarium experience with tropical organisms are essential. Ideally, the successful candidate will have detailed knowledge of the requirements to develop and maintain aquarium systems for the long term holding, propagation and breeding of corals and other tropical benthic organisms.

Attractive working conditions apply including a remuneration package of $89,369 – $116,333 commencing salary plus up to 15.4% superannuation, learning and development opportunities, generous leave entitlements, 9 day fortnight, commuter car transportation to site and many other benefits.  This opportunity will initially be offered for a fixed term period of three years.
