Research Team Leader
Marine Microbiology

The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is Australia's tropical marine research agency with a mission to deliver world class research for the sustainable development, conservation, and management of tropical marine resources and environments. The Institute is headquartered on the coast at Cape Ferguson, 50km south of Townsville, Queensland, and has other laboratories in Darwin, Northern Territory, and Perth, Western Australia. These modern and well-equipped laboratories currently house over 200 staff, research fellows and visiting scientists. The Institute's two coastal research vessels operate across northern Australia and near neighbours. Our people deliver knowledge and advice through research teams for marine biodiversity including aquaculture, coastal water quality and ecosystem health, climate change, and microbiology. The Institute is seeking an experienced scientist to provide research leadership and management to its Marine Microbiology team.

This position will lead and manage a growing team (approx 20 FTE) of molecular and genetic scientists based in Townsville with a mandate to understand marine microbial systems and marine symbioses. The successful applicant will foster a collaborative and productive research culture and provide visionary leadership and business development for this emerging area of science at AIMS. The applicant will have a history of world-class research from a relevant area of marine microbiology including bioinformatics.

This scientific leadership position is an ongoing role, offered initially for a fixed term of 3 years and will be based in Townsville. This position is classified as Principal Research Scientist/Senior Principal Research Scientist (commencing salary of $118,250 - $150,790), as determined by qualifications and experience, plus up to 15.4% superannuation. The salary package for the senior level includes the provision of a private use vehicle. Generous working conditions also apply including a 9 day fortnight and 5 weeks annual leave.
