Arafura Timor Research Facility
The Arafura Timor Research Facility (ATRF) is a joint venture
between AIMS and the Australian National University (ANU)
supported with an Australian government Major National Research
Facility infrastructure grant.
ATRF was created to facilitate world class scientific research
into the resources and peoples of the Arafura and Timor seas
region through the provision of infrastructure and the
constructive engagement of national, Territory and State
departments, industry sectors and overseas northern neighbours.
On 5 September 2005 Charles Darwin University joined the Board of
the ATRF, further enhancing the collaborative research effort in
Darwin.
The award-winning facility is now fully tenanted and supports
a range of collaborative and/or co-invested projects, including:
- Coastal migration patterns of jewfish;
- Satellite tracking of whale shark migration;
- Environmental monitoring;
- Foreign fishing; and
- Sponge farming.
