AIMS @ JCU
AIMS @ JCU (James Cook University) brings together two of
Australias leading tropical marine science research
organisations in a formal research partnership. While AIMS and
JCU have a long history of collaboration, the formal partnership
furthers the development of Townsville as a centre of excellence
for research, education and teaching in marine science.
The joint venture brings together the largest concentration of
tropical marine scientists in the world, with improved access to
infrastructure at both institutions leading to new research
collaborations.
Initial funding of $3.9 million has allowed the establishment
of an active graduate and postgraduate program, with students
acting as a direct link between the partners. Combining funding
and expertise has enabled collective research activities that
could not have undertaken individually.
The collaboration has resulted in: an upgrade of seawater
facilities at AIMS and JCU in support of tropical aquaculture
projects, a state-of-the-art controlled environment aquarium
facility and a fibre-optic communication link between the AIMS
and JCU facilitating virtual in-lab collaboration,
enabling transfer of large data sets and improving interactive
relationships with other universities and research partners.
AIMS @ JCU scholars work alongside AIMS scientists primarily
in tropical aquaculture, coastal processes, and modelling and
stress in tropical marine systems.
