ARNAT's mission is to
heighten communication between researchers whose interests are the
toxic algae found in Australian waters. Such algae are found in both
the marine and freshwater environments and may adversely affect
human health, water quality, livestock, wildlife, tourism and
aquaculture operations. The issues that confront both freshwater and
marine algae toxin researchers are often similar. For example,
analytical methods for toxin analysis, mechanisms of toxin
accumulation, and taxonomic methods for identifying toxin producing
organisms are common to all algal toxin research. We intend to
foster scientific interactions, and educate ourselves about the
different techniques and approaches being used to tackle similar
research problems.
